ETHNIC CULTURES AND FUN
 IN METRO K.C.

webassets/zKCMOSkylineWIKI.jpg

The metro region has been enriched by many interesting cultural traditions.  Just west of the city and north of Topeka, Kansas, are Native American reservations including for the Potawatomi.   Spanish speakers came into the area centuries ago, followed by the French and Americans.  In the 1800s Irish poured in after a potato blight on the Emerald Isle.

Although mostly settling in and near St. Louis, some Germans also came during the 1800s, others since then.  In the aftermath of World War II there were many Jewish refugees and Filipinos.  During the Cold War period came a lot of Koreans, Cubans and Vietnamese.  Later from in and near the Middle East have come speakers of Somali, Arabic and Farsi.

Greek Orthodox hold yearly food festivals.  The Kansas City Irish Festival centers at Crown Center Square, and for example in 2010 over 100,000 people attended.  Many students come from China, Japan, and East African nations such as Kenya which has many speakers of Swahili.

August is the month for the annual Ethnic Enrichment Festival which is hosted in Swope Park near the Band Stand by the Ethnic Enrichment Commission (see link below).  It's a pleasure to stroll about or sit, sampling the array of international cuisines, music, songs, arts and crafts.

For example, you may hear Scottish bagpipes, watch Polynesians dancing upon a stage, watch an Irish jig or Brazilian samba, eat Jamaican jerk chicken, Lithuanian potato salad or French crepes.   There may be food stands filled with goodies made in the traditions of Bolivia, Sweden, Russia, Israel and the Czech Republic, etc, etc.

You're invited.  Just show up and have fun!

SOMALI  CULTURE IN KANSAS CITY

Metropolitan Kansas City, especially Kansas, City, Missouri, is home to thousands of refugees from Somalia on the continent of Africa.  Some of the following Somali words are put into non-grammatical word clusters for making them quicker and easier to learn.  Many of the newcomers are peaceful Muslims who suffered greatly from religious persecution in Africa and who have come here, adding to the area's richness and vitality.
