ARCHITECTURE IN METRO K.C.

Skyline View of Downtown Kansas City

Much of the architecture in metropolitan Kansas City, especially skyscrapers in the Downtown area, is called Art deco, a term applying to other visual arts as well.  It is eclectic and its use began in Paris in the 1920s, climaxed in the 1920s, flourished worldwide in the 1930s into  into World War II, declined and since revived.

It blends glamour with modern functionality.  It is linear unlike art nouveau which is curvy.  Influences include constructivism, cubism, futurism, modernism, neoclassicism, and there is inspiration from ancient Egyptian and Native American forms.  It does not seek to make a political or philosophical statement but seeks to be decorative.

Although concentrated in Downtown Kansas City you will also see Art deco buildings in outlying areas.  For example east of Kansas City is Excelsior Springs, Missouri.  There the Hall of Waters building is classed as Art deco.  In the gift shop are some some Native American motifs, apparently Mayan.
