UNUSUALLY WARM WEATHER FOR EARLY DECEMBER 2012 HAS POSITIVE EFFECT ON KANSAS CITY AREA BUSINESSES IN WINTER OF 2012 BUT WILL POLITICIANS IN WASHINGTON D.C. SPOIL IT BY RUNNING NATION "OFF FISCAL CLIFF"

webassets/Nov5in2012020.JPG

webassets/Nov5in2012024.JPG

Unusually warm weather in early December 2012 is allowing construction projects to speed along.  The photo on your left shows another new building that has just started going up in Overland Park in the old downtown section.  It will house spaces for renting to various businesses, one said to be a landscaping company.  People invest money when they see the chance to make money, "voting their pocket book."

The second photo shows cars parked December 5, 2012, in the Overland Park Farmers' Market.  It's at 7950 Marty St, Overland Park, KS 66204, a block or two north of the new building in the other photo here.  Thus far in what is normally a snowy time of the year, the weather has been gentle, warm and even spring-like.  In not only O.P. but downtown Kansas City on the plaza, people are seen jogging about in shorts.

So, people can and no doubt will shop.  However in Washington D.C. radicals called "the Tea Party" faction in the Republican Party are trying to get that party to run the nation's entire economy off a fiscal cliff, meaning get tax hikes of $2,000 or more put on ever U.S. taxpayer instead of the super-rich.  The Tea Partyers have also warned that they will be trying to take over the Republican Party.

They should talk!  Recently they lost the Presidential bid of Mitt Romney, and now if they cause this kind of tax hike they will also have caused major damage to the entire Republican Party, and along the way have twice ruined our nation's market rating.  Boehner, the Republican boss, needs to start turning a deaf ear on the radicals.  They don't represent most Americans, nor even most Republicans.  Sarah Palin, Mitt Romney and company represent themselves, their own bloated bank accounts, their own selfish blindness and illogical moves toward an abyss.

This editor recently sat down with "Shane," who works for the office of Republican Congressman Kevin Yoder.  To sum up, he says that the local Congressman favors some kind of deal being worked out to avoid going over the financial cliff.  If he sticks to that faithfully, helps deliver on it and continues to advocate positive action, then he may yet be praised and re-elected in another two years.

As is, people are tired of the Republican Party just trying to block legislation; they need to start proposing and working toward positive legislation of their own, not just being obstructionists!   For Democrats, Republicans and all Americans, now's the time!  Forwards, march!!!

 EUROPEAN DELIGHTS

This photo shows dolls that go inside dolls that go inside dolls, etc, or what some called "nested" dolls.  According to European Delights near the intersection of Antioch and 95th Street in Overland Park, these are home-made.  The store also offers some food samples, and it carries a lot of chocolates and other mostly Russian foods, publications etc.

O.P. MAYOR WORRIES KANSAS STATE LEGISLATORS MAY
BAN "NO GUNS" SIGNS!

Sign on door of O.P. City Hall

Overland Park Mayor Carl Gerlach has issued a statement noting "We are sworn and bound as elected officials to obey the laws of the State of Kansas, whether we agree or disagree. Our concern is that the legislature may again in 2013, as it did last year, considering making gun laws more lenient by taking away the rights of cities to post 'NO GUNS' signs in public buildings."  He points that if the state legislators were to outlaw such signs then it could be detrimental for just one prime example to the safety for example of children as school buildings now have signs posted that forbid guns from being carried inside.  (City Source weekly newsletter, Oct 4, 2012)

 OVERLAND PARK ORDINANCE PER STATE
LAW NOW ALLOWS PEOPLE TO OPENLY CARRY GUNS

webassets/agunshooterWIKIPEDIA.jpg
After passing Ordinance Number POC-2971 on September 24, 2012, Overland Park officials say they are simply having to comply with an existing state law by now allowing people to openly display handguns in holsters in public places.  Mayor Carl Gerlach doesn't think the law will cause much change; for example it does not appear to have caused problems in Wichita which has a similar ordinance.  Further the Kansas Libertarian Party has said it will act against any ban on openly carrying guns in all the counties and cities of Kansas, believing such a ban is against the U.S. Constitution.  However indoor businesses can post a sign with a line drawn through a gun so as to keep guns out.

OVERLAND PARK SEEKS TO RESOLVE
QUESTION ABOUT A "NUDE" SCULPTURE

webassets/Sept20n2012010.JPG
webassets/Sept20n2012008.JPG

OVERLAND PARK SUPPORTS ARTS, SEEKS TO RESOLVE QUESTION ABOUT A "NUDE" SCULPTURE:  Overland Park, KS - Overland Park city leaders have historically supported public art throughout the community......The Johnson County Election Office certified a petition asking for a grand jury investigation about the headless nude, bronze sculpture of a headless woman called "Accept or Reject." The city has posted that it feels confident the grand jury will decide the the sculpture is artistic rather than obscene.

The controversy shot into high gear back in May of 2012 when Joanne Hughes of Stilwell, Kansas, a mother of two children, used the Mississippi-based, conservative American Family Association (AMA) website change.org to call for Overland Park to get rid of the sculputre,
claiming that the nude is a girl photographing herself thus boosting problems with sexting by children although artist Yu Chang has said instead it shows a woman focusing elsewhere so much so that she ignores “her own mind, soul and identity.”  The nude holds a camera pointed at her head, making it hard for many to connect with Hughes' contention about sexting.

In any event, the AMA in 1990 got a different grand jury to indict Cincinnati’s Contemporary Arts Center for what it called obscene photos by artist Robert Mapplethorpe, but jury ruled against AMA.  Hughes has called the sculpture vulgar and offensive.   In
Miller v. California, the U.S. Supreme Court wrote that to be obscene a work has to be 1. without "serious literary, artistic, political or scientific value."  2. It must depict or describe in a patently offensive way, sexual conduct specifically defined by applicable state law. 3. An average person applying "contemporary community standards" must find it "appeals to the prurient interest."

PROPERTY TAX RATE REDUCED, MORE POLICE HIRED: Details are provided at http://opkansas.org/Newsroom/NewsRelease/OP-Adopts-2013-budget-more-police-tax-decrease  A natural question is how Overland Park can afford to do these things, for example, if more new businesses were attracted into the area so that they have contributed more in overall tax revenues.  This will bear some inquiry by this paper, so come back later to see what is discovered.
